Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.2.91

Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.2.91) Rupa Goswami has said:

sajati-yasye snigdhe sadhau sangah svato vare

What sort of saintly persons shall we try to mix with earnestly? Those who are in our line, who have the same high spiritual aspirations as we do, and who hold a superior position. To associate with such saintly persons will help us the most to progress towards the ultimate goal.

There may be some obstacles, but if at heart we are sincere, the environment cannot deceive us, because God’s inner help is there, cooperating with our sincere, inner need (na hi kalyana krt kascit durgatim tata gacchati ). What we want from our innermost hearts cannot but come true, because Krsna knows everything. There may be some obstacles, but by Krsna’s help, they shall all be eliminated and our innermost aspiration will be crowned with success.

TEXT 16.28|| SB 11.22.28 ||

tvatto jnanam hi jivanam pramosas te ‘tra saktitah tvam eva hy atma-mayaya gatim vettha na caparah

It is by Your mercy that the living entities obtain knowledge, and it is by Your illusory energy that they fall from knowledge. I believe that no one but You can actually understand how Your illusory energy works.

COMMENTARY
Uddhava said: You are the source of all knowledge and so it is by Your mercy that a living entity can obtain knowledge. Your energy, vidya, awards one knowledge and Your energy, avidya, takes away that knowledge.

PURPORT
Uddhava further inquired: By accepting subordination to the Supreme Lord, the living entities obtain knowledge. The bewildering potency of the Lord creates illusion in the minds of the rebellious living entities. Maya-devI exists under the shelter of the Supreme Lord and she manifests her potency in two ways—the covering potency and the throwing potency. Those who are under the influence of the Lord’s illusory energy cannot understand how they are being conditioned.

A devotee who actually desires to attain perfection in this very life should tolerate all kinds of difficulties. Even when insulted, ridiculed, or even beaten or confined by miscreants, or when spat upon or urinated upon by ignorant fools, with intelligence fixed in devotional service, he should remain undisturbed.

Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.37

na hy ataḥ paramo lābho

Translation
Indeed, there is no higher possible gain for embodied souls forced to wander throughout the material world than the Supreme Lord’s saṅkīrtana movement, by which one can attain the supreme peace and free oneself from the cycle of repeated birth and death.

The Jiva Soul

Composition by by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur

Srila Sachchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakur, the nineteenth century pioneer of Krishna consciousness, was born in 1838 in Bengal. He worked tirelessly to preserve the spiritual tradition and literature of India; he composed, edited, and published more than 100 books in Sanskrit, Bengali, and English.

The following poem, Sharagrahi Vaishnava, was composed in 1874.

The Jiva Soul:

Alas for those who spend their days
In festive mirth and joy.
The dazzling, deadly liquid forms
Their hearts fore’er employ.

The shining bottles charm their eyes
And draw their heart’s embrace;
The slaves of wine can never rise
From what we call disgrace.

TRANSLATION

King Parīkshit said: My lord, Śukadeva Gosvāmī, all the various activities exhibited by the incarnations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are certainly pleasing to the ear and to the mind. Simply by one’s hearing of these activities, the dirty things in one’s mind immediately vanish. Generally we are reluctant to hear about the activities of the Lord, but Krishna’s childhood activities are so attractive that they are automatically pleasing to the mind and ear. Thus one’s attachment for hearing about material things, which is the root cause of material existence, vanishes, and one gradually develops devotional service to the Supreme Lord, attachment for Him, and friendship with devotees who give us the contribution of Krishna consciousness. If you think it fit, kindly speak about those activities of the Lord.

About Sri Radha Rani

Śrīla Bhakti Rakṣak Śrīdhar Dev-Goswāmī Mahārāj describes the fate of those who understand the glory of Śrī Rādhā by the grace of Śrī Gaurāṅga.

hena rādhā-paricharyā yā̐kara dhana
bhakati-vinoda tā̐ra māgaye charaṇa

Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur says, “I want the foot-dust of those who like to serve Rādhārāṇī; I want to serve those who hold in their hearts the service of Rādhārāṇī. I want to fall at the feet and get the dust of the holy feet of those whose only wealth is the service of Śrī Rādhikā.”

rādha-bhajane yadi mati nāhi bhelā
kṛṣṇa-bhajana tava akāraṇa gelā

“If you cannot give your mind to the service of Rādhārāṇī, then all your attempts towards Kṛṣṇa have gone blank; they are all useless. You must see this. If you cannot acquire earnestness to serve Śrī Rādhikā, then all your labour for Kṛṣṇa has gone to hell.

ātapa-rahita sūraya nāhi jāni
rādhā-virahita mādhava nāhi māni

“As we don’t understand the sun without its heat, its potency, so no conception of Kṛṣṇa is possible without Śrī Rādhikā.

Positive vision

Srila Guru Maharaj taught us that whenever we see a bad quality in someone it is a test given to us by Krsna to purify us. Srila Guru Maharaj gave us that vision and we feel that if everyone will see with that type of vision then Krsna will be happy and everyone will be spiritually benefited.

This is so important because we live in an ocean of faults and we can find someone with faults everywhere. Even so many of the spiritual practitioners around us are not perfect. So we will become hopeless if we do not try to see the good qualities in others and in our environment.

A Western scholar, Katherine Mayo, once came to India to learn about Indian philosophy but after arriving she publicly criticised Indian culture. When this happened Mahatma Gandhi said, “She has not come to appreciate the wealth of India, she has come to inspect India’s drains. She is a drain inspector.”
