Srimad Bhagavatam 4.20.31

Prayer of Prithu Maharaj

tvan-mayayaddha jana isa khandito

TRANSLATION

My Lord, due to Your illusory energy, all living beings in this material world have forgotten their real constitutional position, and out of ignorance they are always desirous of material happiness in the form of society, friendship and love. Therefore, please do not ask me to take some material benefits from You, but as a father, not waiting for the son’s demand, does everything for the benefit of the son, please bestow upon me whatever You think best for me.

nodvijet janad dhiro janam codvejayen na tuati-vadams titikseta navamanyeta kancanadeham uddisya pasu-vad vairam kuryan na kenacit

A transcendentalist should not become frightened or disturbed by others, nor should he ever act in a way that disturbs others, or makes them fearful. He should tolerate the insults others hurl at him, and he should not criticize others. He should never create enmity simply for some material advantage, for that would make him no better than an animal.

COMMENTARY
The phrase ati-vada means “very harsh words”.

PURPORT
A saintly person does not cause anxiety to any living entity by means of his body, mind, or speech. In this regard, one should carefully contemplate this verse, which was spoken by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
trnad api sunicena taror api sahisriunaamanina manadena kirtanlyah sada harih
One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street. One should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige, and ready to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind, one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.

The Glories of Purusottam Month (adhi-masa)

Srila Bhaktivionda Thakur In this article “The Glories of Puruṣottama Māsa”, Ṭhākura Bhaktivinoda describes the glories of the holy month of Puruṣottama according to the śāstras, how to observe it and the true goal in following it.

Puruṣottama Māsa Māhātmya
(The Glories of Puruṣottama Māsa)
by Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura

Two divisions of śāstra—smārta and paramārtha

The Vedic ārya–śāstras are divided into two sections — smārta (literature based on smṛti) and paramārtha (transcendental literature based on śruti). Those who are eligible (adhikārī) for the smārta section do not have any natural inclination or taste for the paramārtha–śāstras. The thoughts, principles, activities, and life goal of every human is constituted according to his respective ruci (inclination). Generally, smārtas accept those scriptures which are in accordance with their respective ruci. Having greater adhikāra for smārta–śāstra, they do not demonstrate much regard for paramārthika–śāstra. Providence is the agent behind the creation of these two divisions. Therefore, undoubtedly the maintainer of the world must have a hidden purpose in having made such an arrangement.

Srila Haridas Thakur glory

Srila Haridas Thakur Bhajana Sthali Fulia, West Bengal.

About Srila Haridas Thakur in Sri Chaitanya Caritamrita madhya 11

As soon as Haridasa Thakura saw Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he immediately fell down like a stick to offer Him obeisances, and Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu raised him up and embraced him. Then both the Lord and His servant began to cry in ecstatic love. Indeed, the Lord was transformed by the qualities of His servant, and the servant was transformed by the qualities of his master.
Haridasa Thakura said, “My dear Lord, please do not touch me, for I am most fallen and untouchable and am the lowest among men. The Lord said, “I wish to touch you just to be purified, for your purified activities do not exist in Me.

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu exalted Haridasa Thakura, stating, “At every moment you take your bath in all the holy places of pilgrimage, and at every moment you perform great sacrifices, austerity and charity.  “You are constantly studying the four Vedas, and you are far better than any brahmana or sannyasi.”

Srila Saccidananda Bhaktivinod Thakur

Srila Bhaktivionda ThakurAbout Srila Saccidananda Bhaktivinod Thakur

From the Bengal writing of His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev Goswami Maharaj

Prior to Srila Thakur’s preaching, the pure Vaisnava-dharma preached by Sriman Mahaprabhu had become so degraded, corrupted, and disordered by selfish persons that people considered Vaisnava-dharma to be extremely despicable, to be the dharma of detestably low-natured persons. People considered it to be the dharma of the auls, bauls, kartabhajas, sahajiyas, sakhi-bhekis, neda-nedis, and so on, and mocked it.

Yet by the appearance and endeavour of Srila Bhakti Vinod, Vaisnava-dharma became free from degradation, again self-manifested its pure nature as the dharma of the soul situated atop the heads of all other dharmas, and attained beauty like that of the newly risen shining sun in the sky of the world’s dharmas. All the virtuous souls understood that Vaisnava-dharma is the one and only pure (nirmal), effulgent (ujjvala), non-envious (nirmatsara), devotional and pleasing (‘bhakti-vinodan kari’) dharma of the self within which there is no duplicity or contamination. They understood that if all other dharmas are perfectly performed individually and collectively, then they will attain the beautiful position of stairs towards Vaisnava-dharma.

Living entity enjoys the fruit of his karma

Udhava GitaUddhava-Gita TEXT 31

gunah srjanti karmanicguno ‘nusrjate gunanjivas tu guna-samyukto bhunkte karma-phalany asau

It is the material senses that perform pious and sinful activities, it is the three modes of material nature that inspire the senses to engage in fruitive activities, and it is the living entity who enjoys the fruit of his karma, with the help of his senses.

COMMENTARY
It was previously described how sinful living entities are degraded to a hellish condition of life. Now, the question may arise as to whether the living entities are helpless or are they the master of their own destiny? The answer is that it is the senses that worship the demigods and perform other ritualistic activities. It is the senses that enjoy intimate association with another’s wife, and perform other abominable acts, thus creating the destiny of the living entity. It is due to being impelled by the three modes of material nature that the senses create one’s future body. The minute independence of the living entity consists of how he chooses to associate with the modes of nature. It is in this way that the living entity experiences suffering or enjoyment of his pious and sinful acts.
