“May that lord of the cows be satisfied by us. Who is Indra when compared to Krishna? Krishna is the master of Indra. And yet he has appeared as the master of cows; the Supreme Absolute Truth has accepted a simple position as the keeper of cows. Superficially, he is a mere cowherd boy. But let that cowherd boy, who holds within him the power of controlling the whole universe, be satisfied with us. We want to worship that Lord who has taken the humble position of the king of the cows.”

The very gist of the Govardhana lila, the very substance of the pastime, is represented in this verse. The milkmen in Vrindavana used to observe a sacrifice to satisfy the king of heaven, Indra, at whose command the rain, clouds, and other subtle elementary powers move. The main wealth of the cowherd men is the cow, and the cow’s main food is grass. Only rain can produce grass, and so the cowherd men used to perform sacrifice to satisfy the subtle power who is supposed to be in command of natural substances like rain.

Losing things of this mortal world is not bad

“Losing things of this mortal world is not bad; it is all coming and going. The body itself, the center of all this activity, will also vanish. Then what is the necessity of collecting so much energy for the bodily connection? So, awaken your soul, the real person within; search him out and try to help him. That is possible only with help from the sadhu.

The day in which we do not find any saint, or have any discussion about the real purpose of life, the inner life, the inner substance, that day we are the loser. Be conscious of that. In all respects, in any way possible, mind your own lesson, mind your own interest, find your own self. Be unmindful towards the external world and circumstances and dive deep into the reality, the inner world.

Krishna is our master.

Krishna is our master.
We are not the master of this world. We are the parts of the whole, and we have our respective duties towards the whole. Our responsibilities are towards another plane of life, which is the most subtle. We are in a diseased condition here, but when we become healthy we will have a higher plan of living.
This is the Vaishnava conception.
There is a higher plane, beyond the jurisdiction of misconception. There is a particular place for me within this universe. What is that? I am suffering, serving the negative side, and in all conceptions of life, I find suffering, janma, mrityu, vyadhi; birth, death, old age, and disease. (BG 13.9) But there is a conception where life is worth living, where there is something to live for. That position has been neglected everywhere in so many different conceptions of religious view.

Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.2.91

Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.2.91) Rupa Goswami has said:

sajati-yasye snigdhe sadhau sangah svato vare

What sort of saintly persons shall we try to mix with earnestly? Those who are in our line, who have the same high spiritual aspirations as we do, and who hold a superior position. To associate with such saintly persons will help us the most to progress towards the ultimate goal.

There may be some obstacles, but if at heart we are sincere, the environment cannot deceive us, because God’s inner help is there, cooperating with our sincere, inner need (na hi kalyana krt kascit durgatim tata gacchati ). What we want from our innermost hearts cannot but come true, because Krsna knows everything. There may be some obstacles, but by Krsna’s help, they shall all be eliminated and our innermost aspiration will be crowned with success.

Krishna’s Supernatural Birth

Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami MaharajŚrīla Bhakti Rakṣak Śrīdhar Dev-Goswāmī Mahārāj describes Vasudev’s vision in Mathurā.

Devotee: Could you describe the details of Kṛṣṇa’s birth?

Śrīla Śrīdhar Mahārāj: On the whole, it is something like imitation. It is nothing like the things we conceive of with our material senses. Kṛṣṇa, a spiritual body, came and showed Himself being born physically. It was an imitation, a show, like a drama, a play.

Devotee: Did Kṛṣṇa appear as a child with four arms or in His mature Viṣṇu form with a crown and ornaments?

Śrīla Śrīdhar Mahārāj: When He came out, Vasudev and Devakī’s eyes were attracted, and they saw Him with four arms and many ornaments. By His will, the iron gate to their cell opened, and the Yamunā, even during in the rainy season, became shallow. A jackal showed Vasudev the path, and he walked through the water of the Yamunā. When he came back, the gate of the cell closed as it was previously. From the material standpoint, all these supernatural events are inconceivable and impossible. They took place only by the Lord’s will. The Lord did not come here by any particular material process, but He did imitate material processes as far as possible.

We shall require surrender, submission, humility

“Somehow, we have to persuade the highest authority to favor us. We must invite the higher authority to accept us. It does not depend so much on our own ability, but on our submission and surrender, our hankering for mercy – not our positive capacity but our negative character, our surrender. As a subject, I cannot make the Infinite the object of my discrimination; He is always the super-subject. I cannot make God the object of my discrimination. He is super-subjective. My position, my attitude, must invite the higher authority to come down to my level and help me, favor me.

Real discrimination or knowledge should take us to self-surrender. Surrender is necessary to attract the attention of the Lord. Everything depends on His sweet will. He is an autocrat: His sweet will is everything. To attract His sweet will, to increase our negative side, our tendency for surrender, to attract His favor, this will be our real problem if we wish to progress in spiritual life.

And to attract the Lord’s attention, all our qualifications must be of a negative character: we shall require surrender, submission, humility. And then we can press our position by praying, “O my Lord, I’m in the worst need; without Your grace I can’t stand. I am helpless. I cannot endure without Your favour.” That sort of hankering, earnestness, and necessity for His mercy will help us. In other words, we are to improve our negative character, and in that way we shall attract the positive, Krishna.”

When the environment comes to attack us

Divine Words of His Divine grace Srila Bhakti Rakshaka Sridhar Dev Goswami

Devotee: When the environment comes to attack us, how can we see that as Krsna?

Srila Guru Maharaj: When the environment is unfavorable?

Devotee: Yes.

Srila Guru Maharaj: We shall try to find out the Supreme Will there. We should feel, “I have done something wrong, so this is coming to control me and to exact the reaction for my offenses. Tat te ‘nukampam susamiksamano. In the perfect vision, we are not to quarrel with the environment. “Not even a straw can move without the Supreme Will, without the order of the Supreme Will. So, whatever is coming to attack me is my necessity. Just that is necessary for me, to correct me.” Just as when the mother is punishing the child, she does so only with the good will to correct the child. Similarly, the Absolute has got no vindictive nature to punish me, but His dealings are only for my correction. We shall have to see and approach in that way.

Tat te ‘nukampam susmiksamano bhunjana evatma-krtam vipakam:

“Whatever undesirable I find here is the result of my previous karma, and by the good will of the Supreme, that previous karma is going to be
finished. I will be relieved. I will be made fit for higher; service to Him, so this has come.” That is the advice in Bhagavatam. Don’t quarrel with the environment.

Try to be adjusted with it; correct your own ego.

Only faith will help you

DIVINE WORDS OF
THE GUARDIAN OF DEVOTION
Srila Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Dev Goswami

jane prayasam udapasya namanta eva
jivanti sanmukharitam bhavadiya-varttam

Hatefully giving up all intellectual attempts to understand the Supreme Truth, those who want to realize You should completely surrender unto You. They
should hear from self-realized devotees about Your holy name and transcendental pastimes. Whatever situation they may find themselves in, they should progress by fully dedicating their mind, body, and words to You. In this way the infinite, who is never conquered by anyone, becomes conquered through love. ( Bhag. 10.14.3)

Srimon Mahaprabhu and Sri Ray Ramananda

The famous conversation of Lord Gaurasundar with Ramananda Ray on the banks of the Godavari River is known as the Ramananda-samvad in the Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta. In those discussions, the highest form of dedication is pure love of God in a heart free from fruitive aspirations and scriptural calculation. Also, Lord Krishna, who appeared as the son of Nanda Maharaj, was ascertained as the sole recipient of the sweetness relished in the mellows of parakiya-rasa. I offer my obeisances to that beautiful Golden Lord, Gaurangasundar, the divine form of Krishna prema.
