Unalloyed Surrender to the Holy Names

What are the characteristics of a person who has taken complete shelter of the holy names?

By misusing the six propensities of the heart (lust, anger, greed, illusion, pride, and envy) one commits sin. One who has taken complete shelter of the holy name does not commit sin.

He engages his lust in discussing topics about Krsna and maintaining his Vaisnava family based on service to Krsna.

He never engages in sinful activities, such as enjoying the wives of others, accumulating more money than he requires, desiring name and fame, cheating, or stealing. He uses his anger against those who are envious of Krsna and the Vaisnavas. In this way, he remains aloof from materialistic association. He avoids subduing and torturing others. Thus, his anger transforms into the tolerance of a tree.

He uses his greed to relish the mellows of ecstatic love for Krsna and thereby does not bother to eat palatable foodstuffs, wear opulent clothes, enjoy beautiful women, or accumulate unlimited wealth.

He uses illusion in experiencing transcendental mellows and thus becomes bewildered by the beauty of Krsna’s pastimes and the Vaisnavas’ characteristics. Wealth, followers, and material happiness do not enamor him. Not bewildered by their improper conclusion, such a person does not become involved in impersonalism, atheism, or false argument.

He engages pride in Krsna’s service and thus renounces the pride coming from high birth, wealth, beauty, education, followers, and bodily strength.

He totally renounces envy and violence toward others. By regulating his life in this way, he does not have the opportunity to commit sin. Rather, his propensity for sinful activities is uprooted. If, however, he accidentally commits a sin, it is nullified without his having to practice atonement.

Slow and Steady

Slow and Steady

Śrīla Bhakti Rakṣak Śrīdhar Dev-Goswāmī Mahārāj discusses the tṛṇād api principles in depth.

amāninā mānadena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ

We should take resort to kīrtan always, but Mahāprabhu recommends that our attitude should be such: tṛṇād api sunīcha, taror api sahiṣṇu, amānī mānada. It is generally upwards, all towards high. Our attitude will be humble, and if we think that we are being done wrong still also we shall take to patience. Amānī, under no circumstances shall we work for our own position and prestige. That should not be our aim.

Amāninā mānadena, and we shall try to respect everybody. It is all mostly connected towards the upper world, towards the Vaiṣṇava world. Tṛṇād api sunīcha, taror api sahiṣṇu, amānī mānada. Our conduct will be always like that, and then only can we thrive well in our campaign.

Slow and steady wins the race: it is a long journey, not a journey to finish within a few hours, or few days, or few years. It is a continued appointment. It is to go on a long way, so we are to adjust accordingly. It is not that we shall run quickly and then we shall stop and sleep, it is not a matter of that type. But it is a long way: we shall have to walk on, and so our attitude will be such, then we will be successful.

By performing the sacrifice of congregational chanting of the holy name, scholars in the age of Kali worship Lord Krsna, who is now non-blackish because of the great upsurge of feelings of Srimati Radharani. He is the only worshipable Deity for the paramahamsas, who have attained the highest stage of the fourth order (sannyasa). May that Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Caitanya, show us His great causeless mercy.

Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is always the most worshipable Deity of the demigods, including Lord Siva and Lord Brahma, who came in the garb of ordinary men bearing love for Him. He instructs His own pure devotional service to His own devotees. Will He again become visible before the path of my eyes?

The compass is the only guide

“Srimad-Bhagavatam says that just as in the vast ocean, when nothing else can be seen, the compass is the only guide, so in the world of the infinite, our only guide is the footsteps of those great souls who have traveled on the path of faith. The way has been marked by the holy footsteps of those who have gone to the highest quarter. That is our only hope.”

“Our inner aspiration for rasa, ecstasy, is buried in the heart and the heart is tied down and sealed. But hearing and chanting the glories of Krsna breaks the seal of the heart, and the heart awakens and opens to receive Krsna, the reservoir of pleasure, ecstasy Himself (rasa vai sah, akhila rasamrta murtih).”

Living beings who are entangled in the complicated meshes of birth and death can be freed immediately by even unconsciously chanting the holy name of Kṛṣṇa, which is feared by fear personified.

aho ananta-dasanam, mahattvam drstam adya me
krtagaso ‘pi yad rajan, mangalani samihase

(S.Bhag. 9:5:14)

“O King, today I have experienced the greatness of the devotees of God, of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, because in spite of my offense against you, you have prayed for my protection.”

Durvasa was astounded to find the depth of generosity in the servitors of Ananta, Narayana. That great rsi began to speak aloud, to announce on all sides the magnanimity, the nobility of the servitors of Narayana: “How great they are! I did so much wrong towards him, and he saved my life from the reaction, the danger that came as reaction! I insulted him, and he is honouring me so much.”
